Dengue Fever in Burkina Faso, 2016

Abstract: We report 1,327 probable cases of dengue in Burkina Faso in 2016. Of 35 serum samples tested by a trioplex test, 19 were confirmed dengue virus (DENV)‒positive: 11 DENV-2, 6 DENV-3, 2 nontypeable, and 1 DENV-2/DENV-3 co-infection. Molecular testing should be conducted to correctly identify causative agents in this complex infectious disease landscape.

“…These findings were expected and reflect the cumulative results of the different epidemics that occurred since 2003. Dengue fever outbreaks were declared in Burkina Faso in 2013, 2015 and 2016 . Therefore, as only IgG antibodies were screened, our study detected all donors who have ever been in contact with DENVs, either before or during the 2016 outbreak, and who still have a detectable title of circulating IgG anti‐DENVs.…”

“…Haemorrhagic syndromes were only reported in East Africa [4,5]. However, dengue outbreaks have been reported recently in some West-Central African countries [6][7][8][9][10] suggesting a switch in the epidemiological dynamics of dengue. The two invasive species, Ae.…”
