Trait emotion regulation strategies and diurnal cortisol profiles in healthy adults.

Abstract: Individual differences in suppression, but not reappraisal, were linked to greater cortisol activation in this naturalistic study. These preliminary results add to a growing body of findings that link suppression to adverse psychological and physiological profiles. (PsycINFO Database Record

“…Its counterpart, CR, is antecedent focused in that cognitions or behaviors are modified before an emotional response has occurred so that one changes the emotional impact of an event (Gross, 1998). Because these strategies can be thought of as trait-like ways of responding to an event, they may impact the levels of chronic stress (Otto, Sin, Almeida, & Sloan, 2018).…”

“…Its counterpart, CR, is antecedent focused in that cognitions or behaviors are modified before an emotional response has occurred so that one changes the emotional impact of an event (Gross, 1998). Because these strategies can be thought of as trait‐like ways of responding to an event, they may impact the levels of chronic stress (Otto, Sin, Almeida, & Sloan, 2018). Interestingly, both trait levels of suppression and reappraisal were associated with exaggerated cortisol stress reactivity to a social evaluative task (Lam, Dickerson, Zocola, & Zaldivar, 2009).…”

“…Two common strategies used to regulate negative emotions 一 cognitive reappraisal and emotion suppression 一 differ in their effectiveness, with reappraisal generally being more effective in downregulating the subjective and physiological experience of negative emotion than suppression (Gross, 2002; John & Gross, 2004). Preliminary work also suggests habitually using suppression contributes to worse physiological health (Appleton, Buka, Loucks, Gilman, & Kubzansky, 2013; Appleton, Loucks, Buka, & Kubzansky, 2014; Chapman, Fiscella, Kawachi, Duberstein, & Muennig, 2013; Otto, Sin, Almeida, & Sloan, 2018), but little is known about the psychological or behavioral mechanisms underlying the associations between emotion regulation and physical health outcomes. The current study used a national sample of middle-aged adults to examine psychological and behavioral mediators of the relations between habitual use of specific strategies used to regulate negative emotions 一cognitive reappraisal and emotion suppression 一 and disease biomarkers.…”

“…At the end of the 20th century, Martin Seligman, an American psychologist, put forward the theory of positive psychology to study psychology from a positive perspective, taking the discovery of individual advantages and virtues as an important measure to stimulate people’s enthusiasm and improve their happiness. Meanwhile, the development of positive psychology can play an important role in cultivating the positive psychological quality of college students ( Stoner et al, 2017 ; Otto et al, 2017 ). From the perspective of innovation and entrepreneurship education, it is crucial to establish and cultivate students’ positive psychological quality.…”
