Perceptions of general and postpresidential election discrimination are associated with loss of control eating among racially/ethnically diverse young men

Abstract: Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the association between young men's perceived experiences with discrimination, both general and following the 2016 presidential election, and their loss of control (LOC) eating. The degree to which men identified with their ethnic identity was evaluated as a moderator.

“…Finally, research is beginning to make clear that disadvantage (Becker et al, 2017, 2019; Coffino, Grilo, & Udo, 2020; Lydecker, & Grilo, 2019) and discrimination (Kelly et al, 2018; Kelly, Cotter, Guidinger, & Williamson, 2020; Mason, Lewis, & Heron, 2017) are significant contributors to disordered eating. Inclusion of these social determinants of health in research, case conceptualization, and treatment is vital to understanding and affirming the experiences of black and Indigenous people with EDs.…”

“…The final section includes four articles examining how environmental stressors, including discrimination and acculturative stress, are associated with disordered eating in black and Indigenous people (Gerbasi et al, 2014; Kelly et al, 2018; Munn‐Chernoff et al, 2015; Perez et al, 2002). We note that relatively few articles on the potential association between discrimination and disordered eating have been published, and urge additional research on the impact of discrimination on disordered eating for people of color (particularly those with multiple marginalized identities, such as black and Indigenous women and gender diverse individuals).…”

“…Researchers are encouraged to continue providing recommendations for modifications to existing treatment models to address the specific concerns of individuals within Hispanic communities. Closer examination of gender variables is also required, as virtually all research conducted in this population excludes males (see Kelly et al, ), transgender individuals, and those of nonbinary orientations.…”

“…65 Moreover, adverse behavioral coping strategies, such as smoking and loss of control over eating, have been used by persons of color to mitigate the effects of discrimination-based chronic stress. 59,66,67 Discrimination based on sexual orientation in minority men was also associated with HIV-risk taking behaviors. 68 Overall, one can posit that constant exposure to discrimination increases the stress response, or allostatic load, on the cardiovascular and metabolic systems and thereby increases the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes incidence, and poor glycemic control.…”
