Osteogenic differentiation in dedifferentiated liposarcoma: a study of 36 cases in comparison to the cases without ossification

Abstract: The bone tissue formed in DDLPS was mainly neoplastic regardless of its morphology and maturity, which highlighted the osteogenic differentiation of the tumour cells. DDLPS patients with osteogenic differentiation tended to suffer from earlier local recurrences, which did not necessarily lead to poor life outcomes.

“…FISH was performed on 4 μm-thick FFPE tissue sections using c-Myc (Cy3)/Ch7CEN (Spectrum Green) dual color FISH probe (Chromosome Science Laboratory, Sapporo, Japan) as described [ 32 ] with modification. Ten additional RCC cases other than those used for aCGH analysis were randomly selected for wild-type (n = 5) and MUT (n = 5; Tables S2 and S3 ).…”

“…As DDLS has a wide histological spectrum in the dedifferentiated component, previous studies have suggested that some histological factors could be associated with its prognosis. 6,7,9,17,19,20 Our study indicated that only round tumour cells were significantly associated with a poorer prognosis. In previous studies, they were described as rhabdoid, epithelioid or epithelial cells, on the basis of their morphological features.…”

“…Caution is necessary when ossification or calcification is detected in malignant lipomatous tumors such as ALTs/WDLs as it may indicate high-grade malignancy due to dedifferentiation or risk of recurrence. 21,22 In our case, the presence of ossification in the tumor, as well as the clinical and imaging findings, led to a preoperative diagnosis of ALT/WDL. In summary, we described an atypical case of SCL with ossification.…”
