Measurement and scan reproducibility of parameters of intravoxel incoherent motion in renal tumor and normal renal parenchyma: a preliminary research at 3.0 T MR

Abstract: Excellent reproducibility evaluation for ADC and D, good for f, and poor for D* derived from IVIM was performed in renal tumors, normal renal cortex, and medulla. D* has limited reliability and scan-rescan reproducibility should be improved.

“…We found D = 2.30 ± 0.16 × 10 −3 mm 2 /s and 2.36 ± 0.14 × 10 −3 mm 2 /s, and f = 19.4 ± 1.9% and 29.6 ± 2.3% for the left and right kidneys, respectively. These values are within the range of reported literature values in healthy volunteers of D = 1.4‐2.1 × 10 −3 mm 2 /s and f = 9‐33% . Recently, a T 2 ‐dependence of D was reported in prostate cancer patients, which could point to our long echo times as a possible explanation why our D‐values lay at the edges of the interval of reported literature values.…”

“…The wCV of D for FC‐IVIM was similar to literature values of conventional IVIM ( wCV D = 5‐17%). The wCV of v and τ from FC‐IVIM are in a similar range as D* from conventional IVIM model (e.g., 25‐194 for various abdominal organs).…”

“…Furthermore, as reported previously, some parameters, such as D∗, might not be reliable enough for clinical translation. [23,24] Therefore, it might be of potential benefit to also predict MVD with a more reliable and clinical routinely used DWI protocol with only 2 b-values. Some previous studies indicated that also ADC values may predict MVD.…”

“…Intravoxel incoherent motion parameters (especially D * ) have modest repeatability and reproducibility (Table 2), [121][122][123][124][125][126][127][128][129][130] perhaps due to their inherent inflexibility in the standard IVIM model and sensitivity to noise, 6 and several approaches have been explored to improve their uncertainty. IVIM values are dependent on the acquisition parameters such as b-values, 118 131 and fitting methods, 81 and uniform acquisition of IVIM data and development of robust IVIM fitting are warranted.…”
