The effects of crocin on the symptoms of depression in subjects with metabolic syndrome

Abstract: This study demonstrates that at a dose of 30 mg per day for 8 weeks, crocin reduced the symptoms of depression in subjects with MetS compared to the control group, and this effect was independent of its effect on the serum PAB.

“…Consistent with the findings of animal studies, the results of our study showed that hesperidin could reduce the severity of depression in patients with mild depression. So, to the best of our knowledge, no clinical trial has been conducted in this area, but a limited number of clinical trials have investigated the effects of other phytochemicals such as curcumin, resveratrol, and crocin on depression (Jam et al, 2017; Kanchanatawan et al, 2018; Lopresti, 2017; Malaguarnera et al, 2018). A review of animal and human studies by Lopresti also concluded that curcumin might be an effective antidepressant for patients with major depressive disorder (Lopresti, 2017).…”

“…Moreover, taking 19.8 mg of resveratrol in oral pills for 90 days in subjects aged 39 and 60 with moderate depression and 15 mg crocin in oral tablets twice daily for 8 weeks in subjects with a mean age of 48 years and mild depression reduced the severity of symptoms. Both studies also included placebo groups (Jam et al, 2017; Malaguarnera et al, 2018).…”

“…For patients with mild to moderate depression, saffron significantly reduced the severity of symptoms, compared with placebo. [21][22][23][24][25]27,28,[39][40][41] Of note, 1 trial 41 administered an extract of C. sativus petals and observed significant improvement, compared with controls. Because crocin is largely absent from petal extracts, this suggests that portions of the C. sativus plant other than stigmas may be a source of bioactive and possibly less expensive compounds.…”

“…A previous review study has reported the efficacy of crocin in the improvement of a wide-range of mental disorders like major depressive disorder, depression, postpartum and post-menopausal depression, and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) (Omidkhoda and Hosseinzadeh, 2022). Crocin reduces the symptoms of depression in subjects with metabolic syndrome (Jam et al ., 2017). Other study has shown that crocin potently prevents anxiety and depressive-like behaviors induced by unpredictable chronic mild stress in rats (Abbaszade-Cheragheali et al ., 2022).…”
