“…This probably indicates the severity of bone loss during the acute phase of SCI. Raised BTMs indicate rapid bone loss and are currently used for individual fracture risk assessment in postmenopausal females and for monitoring osteoporosis treatment, but they are not yet used in high risk groups such as SCI patients [18,19]. Acute SCI presents with a state of spinal shock, resulting in sublesional flaccid muscle tone.…”

“…Hence, this metabolic bone disease is inevitably linked with aging. To be more specific, the prevalence of osteoporosis is currently increasing worldwide probably due to the expansion of the elderly population, along with the prolongation of life expectancy [11][12][13][14] . The underlying mechanism of the precedent correlation includes sex hormones and blood nutrients deficiency, as well as, the accumulation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) 3 .…”

“…Bone metabolism occurs continuously, balanced between growth and bone resorption 16,18 . Bone metabolism activity is known by examination of bone turnover markers (BTM) [16][17][18] . BTM is a biomarker of bone formation or osteoblastic activity and biomarkers of bone resorption or osteoclastogenesis [16][17][18] .…”
