Assessment of radon concentration and heavy metal contamination in groundwater of Udhampur district, Jammu & Kashmir, India

Abstract: Radon concentration was measured in water samples of 41 different locations from Udhampur district of Jammu & Kashmir, India, by using RAD7 and Smart RnDuo monitor. The variation of radon concentration in water ranged from 1.44 ± 0.31 to 63.64 ± 2.88 Bq L, with a mean value of 28.73 Bq L using RAD7 and 0.64 ± 0.28 to 52.65 ± 2.50 Bq L, with a mean value of 20.30 Bq L using Smart RnDuo monitor, respectively. About 17.07% of the studied water samples recorded to display elevated radon concentration above the ref… Show more

“…The equilibrium factor for thoron and its progeny varies from 0.004 to 0.09 with an average of 0.02 which is comparable with value of 0.02 given by UNSCEAR [22]. radon concentration was found in Shiwalik region due to its geology (cobble, pebble and gravel, granite, red purple shales, clays), soil, and source term conditions [41]. The maximum thoron concentration was found in Murree region having Purple/Red colored sand and clay which are rich sources of thorium.…”

“…Various pollution indices such as geoaccumulation index (I geo ), enrichment factor (EF), contamination factor (CF), pollution load index (PLI), and potential ecological risk (RI) that are widely used to evaluate pollution by heavy metals in surface agricultural soils (Mazurek et al 2017;Gąsiorek et al 2017;Oumenskou et al 2018;Kumar et al 2018;Barakat et al 2019a) have been used in this study. The pollution indices are presented in Table 1.…”

“…In recent years, uranium and radon as emerging contaminants are reported from various parts of India and reported by Kumar et al (2018b) Kumar et al (2018a). Similar studies of high uranium in groundwater and its impact on human health in Punjab has been carried out by Bajwa et al (2017), Narang (2018), Sharma et al (2018) and Sharma et al (2019.…”
