Operculina turpethum (Linn.) Silva Manso as a medicinal plant species: A review on bioactive components and pharmacological properties

Abstract: Operculina turpethum (Linn.) (OT) Silva Manso belongs to the family Convolvulaceae. This review incorporates literature for the phytochemical and pharmacological profile of OT herb. Exhaustive literature survey was done using all the details on phytochemistry and pharmacology of OT available. This herb was found to be a potent source of bioactive compounds such as α- and β-turpethein, turpethinic acids (A, B, C, D, and E), coumarins, cycloartenol, lanosta-5-ene, 24-methylene-δ-5-lanosterol, α- and β-rhamnose, … Show more

“…Many plant extracts and their isolated compounds were found to be safe and effective in various in-vitro enzyme inhibitory assays (Tewari et al 2020;Sharma and Singh 2014). The plant's available literature shows that the methanol and aqueous extract were effective in treating diabetes (Pulipaka et al 2012;Gupta and Ved 2017). However, the study was conducted on a pilot scale only.…”

“…Therefore, there is a need to explore the phytochemical as they are considered less toxic than synthetic medicines and help manage type 2 DM (Shoaib et al 2020;Choudhary et al 2020;Eitah et al 2019;Simon et al 2018). The plant Operculina turpethum (L.) Silva Manso (Convolvulaceae) methanolic and aqueous extracts were earlier reported to have antidiabetic activity (Pulipaka et al 2012;Gupta and Ved 2017). However, earlier studies were conducted at the pilot scale only as the methanol and aqueous extract was earlier reported to have antidiabetic activity.…”

“…[17] O. turpethum is useful in anorexia, constipation, haemorrhoids, fistulas, and jaundice. [18] Results of the study showed that the administration of PetSaffa granules for 21 days significantly improved bowel movements as well as the constipation score. Besides, the formulation was also found to reduce the frequency and severity of constipation symptoms as well as gas and acidity without causing any adverse drug reactions.…”
