Small bowel tumors: A digestive endoscopy society of Taiwan (DEST) multicenter enteroscopy-based epidemiologic study

Abstract: This endoscopy-based study revealed the most common histology of benign SB tumors were hamartoma and adenoma, and malignant ones were lymphomas, GISTs, adenocarcinomas and metastatic cancers. Most of them were male gender, except for GISTs, and with proximal location, except for lymphomas. Further large-scale investigation efforts are warranted to elucidate the epidemiology of SB tumors.

“…Approximately three quarters of epithelial tumors were found in the duodenum or jejunum, and all were observed as solitary lesions (Table 2). Previous studies using BAE reported that primary small intestinal adenocarcinoma was located mainly in the duodenum or jejunum with a range of 77.8%–100.0%[6,7,11-14]. Primary small intestinal adenocarcinoma was reported as a solitary lesion in several studies[6,7,12-14], which was consistent with our results, whereas metastatic tumors were sometimes observed as multiple lesions[11,15].…”

In our classification, primary and metastatic tumors were classified into the same groups; however, it might be better to distinguish between metastatic and primary tumors.…”

“…Pre-malignant lesions and polyposis syndromes are associated to increased risk of small bowel carcinoma warranting screening, surveillance and appropriate treatment ( 7 ). The knowledge of the epidemiology of SBTs helps to increase the awareness of this disease ( 8 , 9 ).…”

“…Nevertheless, many practitioners may feel compelled to proceed with small bowel investigations, particularly in elderly individuals, for fear of missing small bowel cancers, Crohn's disease or vascular ectasias that are at risk of re-bleeding. The reported prevalence of small bowel cancers in the general population, including adenocarcinoma, lymphoma, stromal tumours and others, is 1 to 1.5 per 100,000 persons [11,12].…”
