Hand‐spinning chrysotile exposure and risk of malignant mesothelioma: A case–control study in Southeastern China

Abstract: While chrysotile has been commonly used by Chinese textile industry for many years, investigations on the association of chrysotile exposure with risk of mesothelioma in China are scarce. We conducted a case-control study in a county located at Southeastern China, including 46 cases and 230 individually matched controls. A semi-quantitative method based on experts' assessment was used for evaluating hand-spinning chrysotile exposure. Conditional logistic regression models were used to assess the association of… Show more

“… 1 Long-term exposure to asbestos during activities such as mining, shipbuilding, and construction is a well-established risk factor for mesothelioma. 2 , 3 , 4 In addition, germline BAP1 variations and radiotherapy may also be associated with the development of mesothelioma. 5 , 6 , 7 Male individuals have higher incidence and mortality rates for mesothelioma compared with female individuals, and mesothelioma is commonly diagnosed at older ages because of its long latent period (approximately 40 years).…”

“…Case reports and other studies presenting cases with unusual exposures, or exposures uncommon in males and more common in females, should be considered in any scientific review of the epidemiologic literature because they would further contribute to understanding the true extent of asbestos exposure in both females and males 52–56 …”
