Reliability of a Skin Diagnostic Device in Assessing Hydration and Erythema

Abstract: Using the protocols outlined in this study, the SD202 demonstrates high reliability for assessing skin hydration and erythema levels. It is possible that the SD202 can be used in clinical practice as an appropriate tool for skin hydration and erythema assessment.

“…This technique can be used to compare the effectiveness of various barrier creams by measuring the electrical conductance before and after repeated soak cycles. 48 Skin hydration can also be assessed in studies of periwound skin near venous leg ulcers, diabetic ulcers, and pressure-prone areas of the sacrum 49 as predictive information for wound healing potential or pressure injury development; the authors suggested a bimonthly assessment of periwound hydration and erythema to help guide care.…”

“…3 Therefore, the SC can provide vital information on the function and biophysical properties of the skin. 9 Skin that is dry, or inadequately hydrated, is increasingly vulnerable to PU development, 10 as the fragility and inelasticity of the superficial skin becomes more susceptible to breakdown from external mechanical forces. 11 Excessive hydration or moisture, on the other hand, can result in maceration, impaired barrier function, and breakdown.…”
