C21 steroid derivatives from the Dai herbal medicine Dai-Bai-Jie, the dried roots of Marsdenia tenacissima, and their screening for anti-HIV activity

Abstract: Twenty-three new C steroidal glycosides, marstenacissides C1-C10 (1-10), D1-D7 (11-17) and E1-E6 (18-23), and four new C steroids, 11α,12β-O-ditigloyl-tenacigenin C (24), 11α-O-benzoyl-12β-O-tigloyl-tenacigenin C (25), 11α-O-tigloyl-12β-O-benzoyl-tenacigenin C (26) and 11α-O-tigloyl-12β-O-benzoyl-marsdenin (27), were isolated from the Dai herbal medicine Dai-Bai-Jie, derived from the roots of Marsdenia tenacissima. The chemical structures of all compounds were established by spectroscopic techniques, including… Show more

“…Studies have found that C21 steroidal glycosides in Marsdeniae tenacissimae Caulis were the main active components. Intriguingly, extensive research demonstrated that C21 steroidal glycosides harbor anti-tussive, anti-asthma, and antitumor activities ( Pang et al, 2018 ; Wang et al, 2018 ).…”

“…The chemical structures analysis by spectroscopic techniques, such as NMR spectroscopy, indicated a C 21 steroidal skeleton for all these 27 compounds. Further 13 C-NMR data suggested that these compounds had the same sugar moieties located at the C-3 hydroxyl group ( 58 ). This same group has also isolated 16 new POP glycosides, marstenacissides A1–A7 and marstenacissides B1–B9, from MT roots.…”

“…In addition, the leaves contain benzoic acid, gallic acid, pyrogallol, salicylic acid, trans-cinnamic acid, and vanillic acid [27]. Pharmacological studies have revealed that this plant possesses anti-cancer [28,29], anti-HIV [30], anti-tumor [31], anti-inflammatory, anti-diarrheal, and immunomodulatory properties [32]. Many researchers have extensively studied the phytochemical constituents and pharmacological activities of different parts of this plant.…”
