“…Other bacterial pathogens have been implicated as potential causes of clinical urethritis, either in clustered case series or as sporadic cases such as Haemophilus influenzae and Haemophilus parainfluenzae (719)(720)(721)(722)(723). Haemophilus was identified in 12.6% of cases among 413 men (mostly MSM reporting insertive oral sex) ( 724), and high rates of azithromycin resistance (39.5%) were identified among Haemophilus urethritis patients (725).…”

“…In the current study, differential abundance testing within voided urine samples did identify two species that differed by sex: Haemophilus (over-represented in males) and Schaalia canis (over-represented in females). Haemophilus has been well-documented in the male urethra, with various strains of Haemophilus shown to associate with urethritis in men [ 55 58 ], and Schaalia canis , formerly known as Actinomyces canis [ 59 , 60 ], has been previously isolated from the canine vagina [ 61 ]. These findings support the notion that urethro-genital microbes can contaminate the UM of voided canine urine samples and contribute to differences between sexes.…”

“…The recognition that some NTHi biotype IV isolates were commonly recovered from the genitourinary (GU) tract was first reported in Canada in the late 1970s (12,13). Subsequently, many of these isolates were confirmed to be associated with urogenital and neonatal infections, and several groups postulated that these strains had a predilection for the female genital tract (8)(9)(10)(11)(14)(15)(16)(17). Using electrophoretic typing, Quentin et al demonstrated in 1990 that a group of NTHi biotype IV isolates, predominantly from patients with obstetric infections or serious neonatal disease, was divergent enough from H. influenzae sensu stricto that it definitively represented a novel species of Haemophilus (10).…”

“…These organisms were then called "H. influenzae cryptic genospecies" and, later, Haemophilus quentini, a name that has never been formally proposed (8)(9)(10)(11). More recently, a number of reports have described H. quentini strains isolated from the urinary tracts of adult men and noted their association with urethritis in this group (16,17). Several groups have explored the role of particular adhesins that may allow for enhanced adherence of H. quentini in the urogenital niche (14,(18)(19)(20)(21)(22).…”
