Detection of total hip arthroplasties at airport security checkpoints – how do updated security measures affect patients?

Abstract: The percentage of patients who have THA triggering security alarms has decreased. Furthermore, the number of patients who feel that their prosthesis caused traveling inconvenience has decreased. We feel that this decrease in alarms triggered and improved perceptions about inconvenience are related to the increased usage of new technology.

“…9 First, an all-polymer bearing implant would be beneficial to the ~2% of potential THA patients who exhibit metal-sensitivity reactions. 10,11 Second, an all-polymer bearing implant will not activate metal detector alarms at airport security gates (because of the rising threats of terrorism, airport security has become more severe 12 ), which may contribute to improving the QOL for THA patients. Third, the molding process (e.g., injection molding) for a polymer implant has the potential to reduce manufacturing time and costs, which may benefit developed markets and emerging markets.…”

“…[1][2][3][4] This historical tragedy stimulated travel restrictions and sensitivity of airport metal detectors were increased, leading to inconvenience, such as thorough and prolonged body search reported by patients during national and international air travels. [5][6][7][8][9] It is still a matter of controversy the factors that influence detection of some implants, but some hypothesis were generated by observational studies, surveys and experimental studies. 4 Metal composition, metal weight, amount of body mass, distance from metal to detector, and speed when crossing the detector are potential elements that can influence the metal detection.…”

“…There have been several studies that have reported that 47% to 88% of patients trigger the security checkpoint alarms with their orthopaedic hardware. 2 But factors like speed of passing through the metal detector arch, patient BMI, implant weight and composition of metal may alter the results. 3 In a study done by Josef G et al stated that implants weighing more than 145g triggered an alarm.…”
