Association between objective signs and subjective symptoms of dry eye disease in patients with systemic sclerosis

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between clinical signs and symptoms of dry eye disease (DED) in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). This cross-sectional observational study included 19 SSc patients and 19 normal subjects with no ocular symptoms or ocular surface disorders. Clinical parameters included tear film break-up time (tBUT), Schirmer I, lissamine green (LG) dye, and tear film osmolarity tests, tear production, and tear secretion flow. For assessment of the dry eye symptoms, th… Show more

“…44 In examining objective signs and subjective symptoms of DED in SSc patients, the authors of another study found a positive correlation between subjective symptoms and disease duration. 45 In our study, a significant association was detected between NFC data and both tear film stability and subjective symptoms of DED. Because some NFC attributes are relevant to DED, these findings require further investigation to determine whether NFC is an applicable supplementary diagnostic tool for DED.…”

“…DED can be assessed based on a combination of symptoms and signs. However, several studies reported poor correlation between DED symptoms and signs [26][27][28]. Dryness symptoms could be assessed systematically using validated questionnaires that include questions allow for the monitoring of dryness symptoms and their frequency and or their severity over time [29].…”

“…At the following stage the skin becomes shiny, taut and adherent to the subcutis [14]. Rentka et al [17] found a significant correlation between the OSDI question-Open Access Library Journal naire and the duration of SSc. The data obtained in our study showed a good correlation between the OSDI and SANDE questionnaires, evidencing that both can be used to support the diagnosis of dry eye in SSc patients.…”
