Strength of Occipital Hair as an Explanation for Pilonidal Sinus Disease Caused by Intruding Hair

Abstract: Occipital hair exhibited considerable vertical strength. Because occipital hair exerted the greatest force and cut hair fragments were found in the pilonidal nest in large quantities, these data suggest that pilonidal sinus disease is promoted by occipital hair. “…Cut hair fragments from occipital region were found in pilonidal nest which suggests that disease is related to this particular region as source. In concordance to their study authors are suggesting reduction in production of hair fragments in occipital (for example by shaving), removing cut hair along dorsal crest, reducing contact with hair within intergluteal fold such as with promptly showers after a hair cut in persons at risk [8].…”

“…2 They acknowledge that stronger, razor-sharp cut hairs from the head (as seen in Figure 1), accumulating between the buttocks and piercing the healthy skin, 3 may be the source of pilonidal sinus disease. 4,5 We agree with the majority of conclusions in the guidelines, but several topics are controversial at best.…”

“…Die Haare spielen eine zentrale Rolle in der Entstehung des Pilonidalsinus [3,4]. Doll und Kollegen wiesen in 2017 nochmals auf die wesentliche Rolle der Haare im Pathomechanismus hin [5]. Jedoch kann nicht davon ausgegangen werden, dass die aufgefundenen Schnitthaare im Bereich eines Porus auch dort entstanden sind.…”
