Proposal Guidelines for Standardized Operating Procedures of Brain Autopsy: Brain Bank in South Korea

Abstract: To obtain an in-depth understanding of brain diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases, psychiatric illnesses, and neoplasms, scientific approach and verification using postmortem human brain tissue with or without disease are essential. Compared to other countries that have run brain banks for decades, South Korea has limited experience with brain banking; nationwide brain banks started only recently. The goal of this study is to provide provisional guidelines for brain autopsy for hospitals and institut… Show more

“…Neuropathological analysis was performed at Chuncheon Sacred Heart Hospital, Chuncheon, Korea. Autopsies were performed according to the standard protocols of National Neuropathology Reference and Diagnostic Laboratories for Dementia (NRD) supported by Korea National Institute of Health [10, 11]. Neuropathological diagnostic analysis was performed on sections, including the frontal, occipital, and basal ganglia of the right and left hemisphere.…”

“…9 To prevent under-recognition of LATE-NC during brain autopsy, it is critical to perform TDP-43 immunohistochemistry on three anatomical sections, as proposed previously. 10 The prevalence of LATE-NC increases gradually with age, while that of severe ADNC decreases. 11 Consequently, LATE plays a pivotal role in amnestic-type cognitive impairment among the rapidly growing oldest old population.…”

“…We followed the guidelines for standardized operating procedures for brain autopsy, which was provided by the NRD. 8 Brain autopsies were performed at Samsung Medical Center (n=9), Jeju National University Hospital (n=1), and Ilsong Institute of Life Science, Hallym University (n=1). The autopsy of the Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) patient was undertaken at the Korea CJD Diagnostic Center (Ilsong Institute of Life Science, Hallym University).…”

“…Pathological assessments were performed using institution-specific protocols rendered at consensus conferences, as previously described. 8 All autopsies included tissue sampling in regions relevant to the differential diagnosis of dementia based on published consensus criteria. 9 10 11 12 13 14 Tissue staining included some combination of hematoxylin/eosin, silver staining with modified Bielschowsky or Gallyas methods, and immunohistochemistry for Aβ, hyperphosphorylated tau, α-synuclein, ubiquitin, and transactive response DNA binding protein 43 (TDP-43).…”
