Diagnostic dilemma in cervical endocervicosis

Abstract: Müllerianosis is an embryonic Müllerian disease, resulting in the formation of the benign diseases adenomyosis, endometriosis, endosalpingiosis, and endocervicosis. Endocervicosis primarily affects the bladder, and rarely the cervix. Cervical endocervicosis, which is also a pseudoneoplastic glandular lesion, could be misinterpreted as a premalignant or even a malignant lesion. Because the treatment of these diseases is very different, early clinical diagnosis is important. Unfortunately, however, this lesion i… Show more

“…16 It primarily involves the urinary bladder and rarely the uterine cervix. 15 This may explain the few cases with cystically dilated glands in the endocervical and isthmoendocervical isthmocele ridges in our series. Other uncommon incidental microscopic findings in our series included foreign body giant cell reaction, hemosiderin deposits, degenerative elastic changes of the stroma, placental implantation site, and scar endometriosis.…”

“…Endocervicosis is characterized by irregularly arranged endocervical-type glands often cystically dilated that may involve the cervical wall. 15 Some authors associated this phenomenon with mechanical causes like in isthmoceles rather than Mullerianosis. 16 It primarily involves the urinary bladder and rarely the uterine cervix.…”

“…The preoperative imagiologic and histological study is important, though, to avoid both the misdiagnosis of malignancy and the overtreatment of a benign disease and its possible sequela. [ 8 ]…”
