Plasma fibrinogen and serum albumin levels (FA score) act as a promising prognostic indicator in non-small cell lung cancer

Abstract: BackgroundEvidence implies that preoperative plasma fibrinogen and serum albumin are associated with cancer prognosis. We aimed to explore the prognostic values of the score based on plasma fibrinogen and serum albumin levels (FA score) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), and to compare that with prognostic nutritional index (PNI).Patients and methodsIn all, 182 patients pathologically diagnosed with NSCLC were included in this study. Kaplan–Meier survival analysis and multivariate analysis were used in the… Show more

“…In addition to our analysis, recent studies also indicated a positive correlation between elevated plasma fibrinogen levels and poorer prognosis in other solid tumors including esophageal carcinoma, 37 39 small cell lung carcinoma, 40 non-small cell lung carcinoma, 41 upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma, 42 , 43 epithelial ovarian cancer, 44 colorectal cancer, 45 renal cell carcinoma, 46 , 47 and gastric cancer. 48 , 49 There are several theories that may explain this association: 1) tumor progression is usually coupled with elevated inflammatory responses and leukocyte infiltration into tumor stroma.…”

“…Serum albumin is an important prognostic factor for survival of patients with NSCLC 1921 . Some new indeices based on albumin have been reported for predicting the survival of patients with lung cancer, such indices include prognostic nutritional index 22 , Glasgow prognostic score 23 , fibrinogen and albumin score 24 , albumin and neutrophil combined prognostic grade 25 , and albumin-to-fibrinogen ratio 26 . If CRP and albumin can predict the survival of patients with NSCLC, then their combination may better predict the outcome than the use of CRP or albumin alone.…”

“…Hyperfibrinogenemia can exist in many patients with malignant tumors including NSCLC and SCLC, which suggests a poor prognosis. [4,5,7,10,19] Fbg, synthesized by liver, is the highest content of coagulation proteins in plasma and can be converted to fiber polymer (insoluble fibrin) by activated thrombin. It plays a vital role in blood coagulation, fibrinolysis, inflammatory response, wound healing, and tumorigenesis.…”

“…[4,22] Therefore, in our research and early studies, we found the later the N, M, and CS were, the higher the average levels of plasma Fbg were. [19]…”
