Global loss of myelin water over 5 years in multiple sclerosis normal-appearing white matter

Abstract: The decreases we observed in MWF suggest that changes in myelin integrity and loss of myelin may be occurring diffusely and over long time periods in the MS brain. The timescale of these changes indicates that chronic, progressive myelin damage is an evolving process occurring over many years.

“…Ten participants [eight females and two males; mean age ± standard deviation (SD) = 57.1 ± 18.0 years; range, 24.7–80.3 years] with MS were scanned on a 3T Tim Trio MRI system (Siemens Healthcare, Erlangen, Germany) with a 32‐channel, receive‐only head coil; and, although the aims of this study were not related to MS per se , it was expected that patients with MS would yield a wider range of quantitative T 1 w/ T 2 w ratios and MWFs than a population comprised solely of young, neurologically‐healthy controls – providing a wider dynamic range for subsequent comparisons between methods. All participants with MS were diagnosed by a board‐certified neurologist on the basis of the revised McDonald criteria .…”

“…CNS abnormalities beyond obvious MS plaques are also well documented . The “normal‐appearing white matter” (NAWM) is a commonly described feature of white matter that appears normal on conventional MRI, but abnormalities can be detected using advanced MRI …”
