Cognitive strategies in the mental rotation task revealed by EEG spectral power

Abstract: The classic mental rotation task (MRT; Shepard & Metzler, 1971) is commonly thought to measure mental rotation, a cognitive process involving covert simulation of motor rotation. Yet much research suggests that the MRT recruits both motor simulation and other analytic cognitive strategies that depend on visuospatial representation and visual working memory (WM). In the present study, we investigated cognitive strategies in the MRT using time-frequency analysis of EEG and independent component analysis. We scru… Show more

“…The focus was on frontal, parietal and occipital EEG channels according to previous findings. Independent component analysis (ICA) was used to determine specific reactions of spatio-temporal different sources (Gardony et al, 2017) and allowed the successful detection and elimination of artifacts (Mognon et al, 2011;Radüntz et al, 2017;Puma et al, 2018).…”

“…Initially, studies that dealt with the determination of workload were conducted in the laboratory using different task batteries (Gevins et al, 1998;Gevins and Smith, 2000;McEvoy et al, 2001;Berka et al, 2007;Grimes et al, 2008;Baldwin and Penaranda, 2012;Brouwer et al, 2012Brouwer et al, , 2014Christensen and Estepp, 2013;Weiland et al, 2013;Gerjets et al, 2014;Hogervorst et al, 2014;Ke et al, 2014;Hou et al, 2016;Gardony et al, 2017;Rosen and Reiner, 2017;Puma et al, 2018). Meanwhile, investigations of cognitive workload with more realistic tasks became more popular (Kohlmorgen et al, 2007;Lei and Roetting, 2011;Aricò et al, 2018;Dehais et al, 2018).…”

“…The wavelet family used in this study consisted of 8 cycles at the lowest frequency (8 Hz) with an expansion factor of 0.5, progressively increasing the number of cycles to 12.5 cycles at the highest frequency (25 Hz). Finally, we used single-trial baseline correction to compute mean ERSP for each individual trial [ 47 ]. This method calculates for every trial and frequency, 200 complex vectors evenly spaced in time.…”

“…Besides motor imagery, recent studies showed that spectral domain features of EEG can also be utilized for mental tasks classification [32], mental states monitoring [33] and cognitive decision prediction [34], [35]. Previous study has also shown that spatial dynamic was also part of EEG spectral features in cognitive tasks analysis [36].…”
