Pre‐Dialysis Neutrophil‐Lymphocyte Ratio, a Novel and Strong Short‐Term Predictor of All‐Cause Mortality in Patients With Diabetic Nephropathy: Results From a Single‐Center Study

Abstract: Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is an inflammatory marker affecting the prognosis of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. This study aimed to evaluate NLR levels predicting all-cause mortality in ESRD patients with diabetic nephropathy (DN), which have not been evaluated. We recruited 151 isolated DN patients who started hemodialysis between January 2009 and December 2014 at the Japanese Red Cross Ishinomaki Hospital. The primary outcomes were 1- and 3-year survival rates. The association between NLR and… Show more

“…Pre-dialysis neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a novel and strong short-term predictor for all-cause mortality in HD patients[ 27 ]. NLR has been shown to have predictive utility in numerous disease states, including acute myocardial infarction and autoimmune disease[ 74 , 75 ].…”

“…NLR represents systemic inflammation, nutritional status, and atherosclerosis, which are all prevalent in CKD patients[ 76 , 77 ]. One single-center Japanese cohort revealed that NLR is superior to other generic biomarkers for 1-year survival among patients with ESKD due to diabetic nephropathy[ 27 ]. Although the usefulness of NLR has been widely studied in CKD patients, more data on its accuracy in diverse CKD patients are needed.…”

“…A total of 1048 potentially relevant studies were obtained from electronic databases and citations of reference lists, out of which 10 cohort studies [12,[21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29] from 5 countries met the inclusion criteria. Three of the studies were conducted in China.…”

“…In patients with CKD, the NLR and PLR predict disease progression and the presence of albuminuria (19,20). Although several studies have suggested that both markers also predict mortality in patients with CKD, there are contradictory results (21), they are studies done in dialysis patients (22,23), or patients with CKD in stages 1-5, but in Asian population (24). Because mortality and associated factors differ according to the stage of the disease and in Hispanic population (25)(26)(27), this study aims to assess the association between NLR and PLR with all-cause mortality in Peruvian patients with CKD who was attending tertiary hospital.…”
