En este estudio se evaluó la capacidad de adsorción de la quitosana obtenida de residuos de camarón previamente caracterizada frente a herbicidas de la familia de las triazinas. La extracción de quitina y la obtención de quitosana se realizó empleando: un disolvente patentado por la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, el disolvente MAC-141© (este disolvente es una mezcla estequiométrica de 1 mol de metanol, 4 moles de agua y 1 mol de cloruro de calcio), ultrasonido y temperatura. La caracterización del compuesto final se realizó por análisis elemental, espectroscopía infrarroja, microscopía electrónica de barrido, análisis termogravimétrico y resonancia magnética nuclear. El uso del disolvente MAC-141©, permitió obtener quitosana con un porcentaje de desacetilación en un rango del 40-44 %, mientras que la caracterización química mostró que se obtuvo un sólido estable a temperaturas inferiores a los 280 °C, con poros en la superficie. La quitosana adsorbió las triazinas disueltas en agua a un pH de 3,6 y concentraciones cercanas a 1 mg/L.

Blend of natural coagulants as a sustainable solution for challenges of pollution from aquaculture wastewater

Dependency on sea food has increased owing to its nutrition as well as being complete food. As the production of seafood is enhanced through aquaculture, wastewater release has also improved. The composition of wastewater from aquaculture production has been a concern as it has oil and grease, organic content, etc., which makes its treatment challenging. The present study aims at treating aquaculture wastewater using two natural coagulants—chitin and seeds of Moringa oleifera. The efficiency of the natural coagulants was compared against inorganic chemical coagulant ferric chloride. A blended coagulant with two natural coagulants seeds of Moringa oleifera and chitin was also tested. Jar test apparatus was used in the current experiments, and four coagulant doses were tested against 3 pH ranges, from 6 to 8. The study results showed that the coagulants showed a 30–50% reduction in various physicochemical parameters. Further, the most promising result was obtained with the blended coagulants (di-blend) with 70–81% removal of total nitrogen and total phosphorus and the highest reduction of chloride with 95%. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy showed functionalized groups responsible for coagulation, and X-ray powder diffraction analysis of the blended coagulant indicated the crystallinity and amorphous nature of the compounds. Scanning electron microscope analysis presented a firm and dense structure indicating adsorption of impurities onto the coagulant. Thus, it is evident that natural coagulants can be the solution for the challenges of aquaculture wastewater and specifically the di-blend used in the present is ascertained to be a promising solution.

This study was designed with the aim to produce microbial proteases in presence of speckled shrimp by-product. For this reason, three strains belonging to Bacillus genus, namely, Aeribacillus pallidus VP3, Lysinibacillus fusiformis C250R, and Anoxybacillus kamchatkensis M1V were studied under co-culture procedure. A Taguchi L27 experimental design was applied to optimize the co-culture parameters. The experimental design was built with 9 factors (by-product powder concentration, the pH of the medium, the temperature, the sucrose concentration, the agitation speed, the inoculum sizes of VP3, M1V, and C250R strains, and the culture volume) at three different levels. The obtained results showed that a total protease activity of 8,182 U/mL could be achieved after 24 h of incubation in presence of 20 g/L shrimp by-product and 10 g/L sucrose, at an initial pH of 7, a 40°C temperature and absorbance, at 600 nm, of inoculum sizes of 0.1, 0.3, and 0.1 for VP3, M1V, and C250R strains, respectively. The agitation was set at 200 rpm, and the final volume was 25 mL. Taguchi’s design allowed the identification of temperature, the inoculum size for strain VP3, the inoculum size for strain M1V, and the final culture volume as the most influencing variables. A Box–Behnken design with 27 experiments was carried out for the optimization of these four selected factors. Following such design, the highest protease production reached was 11,300 U/mL. This yield was obtained in a final culture volume of 15 mL containing 20 g/L shrimp by-product powder and 10 g/L sucrose and inoculated with VP3, C250R, and M1V strains at 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2, respectively. The flasks were incubated at 45°C for 24 h with shaking at 200 rpm. The efficiency of chitin extraction by co-cultivation was investigated under the latter conditions. The chitin yield from shells by-product was 16.7%. Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis of the obtained chitin displayed characteristic profiles similar to that of the commercial α-chitin.
