In vitro exposure of bull sperm cells to DMSA-coated maghemite nanoparticles does not affect cell functionality or structure

Abstract: Magnetic nanoparticles can be used in different areas of biology. It is therefore important to know the effects of such nanomaterials on germline cells as they may traverse the blood-testis barrier. This work aimed to evaluate the response of bull sperm after exposure to a magnetic fluid containing DMSA-coated maghemite nanoparticles (MNP-DMSA) in order to determine nanotoxicity. Bull sperm was incubated with MNP-DMSA at final concentrations of 0.06, 0.03 or 0.015 mg Fe/mL. Sperm kinetics, plasma membrane inte… Show more

“…The depletion of defective spermatozoa had cascading effect on the overall improvement in the IPM (%) as well with concurrent results from several other authors (Caldeira, Paulini, Silva, Azevedo, & Lucci, 2018; Chung & Son, 2016; Durfey et al., 2017, 2019; Feugang et al., 2015). At the same time, increase in functional integrity (%) of plasma membrane of live spermatozoa might be due to deletion of greater number of nonfunctional spermatozoa by anti‐ubiquitin Abs coated NPs at fresh stage, and consequently reduction in free radicals induced damage to plasma membrane (Kadirvel, Kumar, Ghosh, & Perumal, 2014).…”

“…Other metal NPs such as dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA)-coated maghemite and CeO 2 NPs did not influence ram or bull sperm structure or function when added in vitro [78], [79]. Although CeO 2 NPs were shown to enhance ram semen preservation by chilling [12], it may also have detrimental effects if orally supplemented, since in mice, induction of oxidative stress and lower sperm characteristics were reported [80].…”
