Cognitive performance of community-dwelling oldest-old individuals with major depression: the Pietà study

Abstract: Individuals with depression and a low level of education presented several cognitive and functional deficits. Depression severity was negatively correlated with incidental memory and functionality. Our findings serve as a description of the presence of cognitive dysfunction in individuals with LLD and suggest that these deficits may be identified based on the results of a BCB.

“…51 Depression was found to be associated with neurocognitive deficits in other patient populations. 52,53 However, assessment of neurocognitive functions showed no difference between those with depression and those without depression in this study, perhaps because this population in general has altered neurocognitive functioning due to SCD-associated neurological complications. Of 70 patients for whom data were available, 23% had a history of central nervous system events.…”

“…The main differences revealed in the analysis were that general cognition was nonsignificant in the Suffering factor, but significant in the Motivation factor, and gender was more relevant in the Suffering factor. Our results corroborate the findings of previous studies, ie, that poorer cognition was associated with higher depression levels . The most relevant of our findings was that the association between a poor cognition and a higher depression only occurred in the Motivation factor.…”

“…Our results corroborate the association between depression and cognitive decline . The presence of depression favours lower cognitive performance, in the same way that cognitive performance influences and conditions the possible presence of depressive symptomatology.…”

“…Impairment in cognitive function (CF) and DS often co-occur among elderly people. 10,11 Significant negative associations between CF and DS have been observed in several cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses. [12][13][14][15] Previous studies have hypothesized that people with cognitive deficits show early insight into their failing capacities and react to this loss with DS 16,17 or that both changes in CF and DS may be driven by underlying risk factors such as cerebrovascular disease.…”
