Although gravitropism forces trees to grow vertically, stems have shown to prefer specific orientations. Apart from wind deforming the tree shape, lateral light can result in prevailing inclination directions. In recent years a species dependent interaction between gravitropism and phototropism, resulting in trunks leaning down-slope, has been confirmed, but a terrestrial investigation of such factors is limited to small scale surveys. ALS offers the opportunity to investigate trees remotely. This study shall clarify whether ALS detected tree trunks can be used to identify prevailing trunk inclinations. In particular, the effect of topography, wind, soil properties and scan direction are investigated empirically using linear regression models. 299.000 significantly inclined stems were investigated. Species-specific prevailing trunk orientations could be observed. About 58% of the inclination and 19% of the orientation could be explained by the linear models, while the tree species, tree height, aspect and slope could be identified as significant factors. The models indicate that deciduous trees tend to lean down-slope, while conifers tend to lean leeward. This study has shown that ALS is suitable to investigate the trunk orientation on larger scales. It provides empirical evidence for the effect of phototropism and wind on the trunk orientation.

Plants have developed different tropisms: in particular, they reorient the growth of their branches towards the light (phototropism) or upwards (gravitropism). How these tropisms affect the shape of a tree crown remains unanswered. We address this question by developing a propagating front model of tree growth. Being length-free, this model leads to self-similar solutions after a long period of time, which are independent of the initial conditions. Varying the intensities of each tropism, different self-similar shapes emerge, including singular ones. Interestingly, these shapes bear similarities to existing tree species. It is concluded that the core of specific crown shapes in trees relies on the balance between tropisms.

You can surely imagine our joy as we heard of yet another new plant journal. Entitled Plants, People, Planet [3] , it is brought to you by the New Phytologist Trust [4] (which is behind another highly regarded plant science journal -the New Phytologist [5] ). Published in partnership with Wiley (John Wiley & Sons [6] ) this cross-disciplinary, Open Access journal (surely to be refered to as PPP?) has set itself the task of answering this question: How can plant science solve the global challenges of the 21st century? With its focus on the interface between plant science and society, it hopes to offer a lively and accessible forum for plant science research and discussion, in its broadest sense. With Editor-in-Chief Prof. Simon Hiscock (Director of the Oxford Botanic Garden and Harcourt Arboretum [7] ) and Dr Paul Wilkin (Head of Science (Natural Capital) at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew [8] ) as Deputy Editor-in-Chief we have a suitably high-profile and eminent pair of plant-minded individuals steering this publishing venture. Plants, People, Planet aims to publish outstanding research across the plant sciences, placing it firmly within the context of its wider relevance to people, society and the planet. To underline that people dimension and highlight the impact (or potential impact) of the research to society, all submissions should be accompanied by a 'societal impact statement' [9] . The journal was officially launched at a special reception at the XIXth International Botanical Congress (IBC) in Shenzhen (China) (IBC2017* [10] ). With potentially 7000 botanists [11] at that event it should have had the most receptive and appreciative audience.
