Strawberry (cv. Romina) Methanolic Extract and Anthocyanin-Enriched Fraction Improve Lipid Profile and Antioxidant Status in HepG2 Cells

Abstract: Dyslipidemia and oxidation of low density lipoproteins (LDL) are recognized as critical factors in the development of atherosclerosis. Healthy dietary patterns, with abundant fruit and vegetable consumption, may prevent the onset of these risk factors due to the presence of phytochemical compounds. Strawberries are known for their high content of polyphenols; among them, flavonoids are the major constituents, and it is presumed that they are responsible for the biological activity of the fruit. Nevertheless, t… Show more

“…The result obtained from the total extract is in accordance with our previous work relative to the Saco sweet cherry DPPH scavenging ability (IC 50 = 16.24 ± 0.46 µg/mL) [ 7 ]. Considering other red-fruit extracts, the three extracts showed more potential than anthocyanin-enriched fraction of Romina strawberry fruits (IC 50 = 1590 ± 3.54 µg/mL), while the colored fraction of Saco proved to have similar activity to whole methanolic extract of strawberries (IC 50 = 30.29 ± 0.18 µg/mL) [ 19 ]. In addition, our total and colored extracts revealed to be more active than crude, petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and butanol fractions of myrtle fruits ( Myrtus communis ) (IC 50 = 130.44 ± 12.1, 108.3 ± 10.2, 111.14 ± 11.1, 85.6 ± 5.7, and 84.42 ± 1.8 µg/mL, respectively) [ 20 ].…”

“…Blueberry extracts inhibite monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) expression in endothelioma cells by transcriptional regulation of MCP-1 and NF-κB, causing hemangioma reduction [ 17 ]. Anthocyanin-enriched fractions from strawberries induce an improvement of the lipid profile showing antioxidant capacity in human hepatoma G2 cells [ 18 ]. Furthermore, anti-diabetic effects of berry polyphenols indicate that its biological activities spread to a regulation of cellular metabolism beyond their mere antioxidant capacity in vivo [ 19 ].…”
