Influence of delayed gadolinium enhanced MRI of cartilage (dGEMRIC) protocol on T2-mapping: is it possible to comprehensively assess knee cartilage composition in one post-contrast MR examination at 3 Tesla?

Abstract: Because dGEMRIC protocol elements resulted in only small differences in T2 relaxation times that were not consistent and lower than the SDC in the majority of regions, our results suggest that T2-mapping and dGEMRIC can be performed reliably in a single imaging session to assess cartilage biochemical composition in knee osteoarthritis (OA) at 3 T.

“…The predominant effect of GCM is on T1 times but it also affects T2 times . Nevertheless, this has minimal influence on concurrent dGEMRIC signal . The combination of T2 mapping and dGEMRIC provides a more comprehensive biochemical assessment of articular cartilage than either method alone .…”

“…Femur cartilage was further divided into non‐weight bearing and weight bearing areas. Weight bearing area was defined as the cartilage within the outer perimeters of the menisci 22 . The MFC was divided into weight bearing central MFC (cMFC) and non‐weight bearing posterior MFC (pMFC).…”

“…The equation calculated the percent change from pre- and post-joint loading activity means when data were not presented as percent change from baseline. A Taylor expansion equation [ 30 ] and a correlation coefficient (correlation = 0.9, derived from an included study with raw and percentage change data) [ 31 ], were used to estimate the standard deviation (SD) of the percentage change, as recommended in the Cochrane Handbook [ 32 ].…”
