Association of inflammatory genes with neuroticism, anxiety and depression in male patients with coronary heart disease

Abstract: The finding of the association between the IL-6 -174G/C and depression, comorbid to CHD, is in line with literature on a role of IL-6 in the development of depression in patients with CHD.

“…Russian researchers report that −174G/C polymorphism was associated with depression comorbid to coronary heart disease. The frequency of the allele G in this group was higher compared with controls [41]. The polymorphic variant rs1800795 (IL6-174G/C) is associated with recent stress on current depressive symptoms and is associated with lifetime depression at a nominal significance level [41].…”

“…Genetic studies have postulated that higher neuroticism score causes anxiety and other psychological disorders. [36][37][38][39] Hettema et al performed the largest population-based twin study on this topic to date. They gauged data from over 9000 male and female twins, discovered 40-50% genetic correlations between neuroticism and anxiety disorders with low environmental correlations, concluding that the association between neuroticism and anxiety disorder is essentially caused by their mutual genetic factors.…”

“…However, inflammation is the main driver of these pathological processes. Patients with CHD and comorbid depression have elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the circulating blood, including interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α (7). Peripheral innate and adaptive immune molecule activation can interact with the central nervous, immune system (8).…”
