Arcobacter Isolation from Minced Beef Samples in Costa Rica

Abstract: The presence of Arcobacter spp. in minced meat (including beef) samples has been well documented in different countries, with varying frequencies. Nevertheless, the only Latin American country reporting this bacterium in minced beef samples is Mexico, with a 28.8% frequency in 2003. Previous studies in Costa Rica have demonstrated the presence of Arcobacter species in samples taken from the poultry production chain, but still there are no studies performed in bovine meat. The aim of this study was to determine… Show more

“…Also, a 6.5% isolation frequency has been described for the whole poultry production chain. From minced meat, a 48% frequency has been reported by Córdoba et al 20 . However, despite the fact that Arcobacter has been isolated from food products of animal origin in Costa Rica, there are no reports about the presence of this bacterium in stool samples from humans suffering from diarrhea.…”

“…Gentamicin, in contrast, displays bactericidal activity against gram-negative aerobes, but generally not against anaerobic bacteria (Pacific and Marchini, 2017). The effective antibiotic activity of gentamicin against Acinetobacter (Anstey et al., 1992), Pseudomonas (Dione et al., 2015), and Arcobacter (Córdoba-Calderón et al., 2017) has been verified. As shown in Figure 5, after metronidazole was added to the OPP-5 and OPP-15 MFCs, electricity generation ceased in 10 h and the cell voltage could not be recovered when the anode solution was refreshed.…”

“…Poultry strains were isolated from chicken viscera and carcasses (Garcia et al, 2013;Fallas et al, 2014). Bovine meat samples were isolated from minced meat (Córdoba et al, 2017) and unpasteurized milk samples from the Northern region of the country. These Before analysis, all strains were transferred from stock cultures to tripticase soy broth and incubated aerobically at 30°C for 24 h. After incubation, each strain was adjusted to a final optical density (OD) 600 nm of 0.1 using sterile peptonized water 0.1%.…”
