Laparoscopic Versus Open Resection for Gastric Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GISTs): A Size–Location‐Matched Case–Control Study

Abstract: The long-term oncologic outcome of laparoscopic resection of primary gastric GISTs is comparable to that of open procedure, but laparoscopic procedure has the advantage of minimal invasion and is superior in postoperative recovery.

“…In the study by Chi. et.al, oral intake was 3.5 days but the mean hospital stay was 6.1 days [20]. In our series, patients had a smooth postoperative course apart from blood transfusion for two cases due to anemia and another had pneumothorax necessitating chest tube insertion.…”

“…In the laparoscopic group, six patients had either local recurrence or distant metastasis and four of these patients died, while, in the open group, ten had either local recurrence or distant metastasis and ve of them died. These results indicate that laparoscopic surgery for gastric GISTs has oncologic outcomes similar to that of open surgery [20].…”

“…Laparoscopic surgery is less invasive compared with open surgery [ 13 16 ]. In addition, umbilical single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) is cosmetically superior to open surgery [ 17 ].…”

“…There are many papers on the safety of laparoscopic resection; however, most often they refer only to gastric GIST. The achieved oncological results are comparable to open surgery [19,20,21,22]. Currently, laparoscopic resection is permissible in tumors below 10 cm in maximal diameter and when the risk of local recurrence is low even after R1 resection; however, the size limits of tumors are constantly shifted.…”
