Steroids and Autoimmunity

Abstract: From the middle of the 19th century, it is known that endocrine and immune systems interact bi-directionally in different processes that ensure organism homeostasis. Endocrine and nervous systems have a pivotal role in the balancing of pro- and anti-inflammatory functions of immune system, and constitute a complex circadian neuroendocrine network. Autoimmune diseases have in fact a complex pathogenic origin in which the importance of endocrine system was demonstrated. In this chapter, we will mention the struc… Show more

“…In this study in pediatrics, the gender difference is not evident, but we noted the importance of pubertal stages given the higher prevalence in pubertal compared to prepubertal subjects. These results may confirm that exposure to hormonal changes during puberty plays a fundamental role in immune function (5,7,17,(28)(29)(30) and consequently in the development of ATD. In our population this is not gender specific, supporting that factors other than hormones, such as environmental effects, could influence the effect of puberty on the disease state (7).…”

“…Endocrine and immune systems influence each other in a bidirectional fashion [36]. In fact, adrenal and sex hormones, as well as vitamin D, melatonin, and prolactin contribute importantly to the homeostasis of the immune system.…”

“…Glucocorticoids as immunomodulatory agents have been applied to treat allergic and chronic inflammatory diseases, such as asthma, dermatitis and rheumatoid arthritis since the 1950s (31,32). Several recent RCTs showed that a combination of glucocorticoids and conventional treatment was superior to conventional monotherapy (33)(34)(35)(36); however, other reports claimed that mono-therapies and combination therapy had similar results (37).…”
