“…ZIKV infection in the eye causes inflammation and injury (Kodati et al, 2017; Miner et al, 2016; Parke et al, 2016; Singh et al, 2017; Wong et al, 2017). To determine the potential role of Müller cells in ZIKV-induced retinal inflammation, we assessed the levels of a number of key pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, adhesion molecules and growth factors in Müller cells after ZIKV infection (Fig.…”

“…Infants with microcephaly due to ZIKV infection are often associated with a high rate of ocular abnormalities in which the most common lesions are chorioretinal atrophy and optic nerve abnormalities (de Paula Freitas et al, 2016; Ventura et al, 2016). Retinopathy in ZIKV-infected adults is less appreciated, but a few reports suggest posterior uveitis and idiopathic maculopathy in ZIKV patients (Kodati et al, 2017; Parke et al, 2016; Wong et al, 2017). Moreover, several groups reported ocular pathological changes in ZIKV-infected mice (Cui et al, 2017; Miner et al, 2016; Singh et al, 2017; van den Pol et al, 2017).…”

“… 1 Data in older patients have also implicated the outer retina as the locus of disease in ZIKV retinopathy. 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 Here we report a patient who presented with abnormalities in the inner retinal vasculature, concurrent with the onset of systemic neurological symptoms in the post-viral period.…”

“…Various presentations of posterior uveitis have been described in association with ZIKV infection . A healthy 20‐y‐old woman in Trinidad presented with bilateral neuroretinitis during the 2015‐2016 South American ZIKV epidemic .…”

“…Unilateral anterior vitreous cells were treated with a short course of topical corticosteroid, and the choroidal lesions showed evidence of regression by 5 mo. Two case reports describe men with unilateral acute idiopathic maculopathy, presenting 10 d after onset of systemic features . Both had unilateral loss of vision, and disruption of the outer retinal and retinal pigment epithelial architecture on OCT.…”
