The role of ST2 and ST2 genetic variants in schistosomiasis

Abstract: Background Chronic schistosomiasis and its severe complication, periportal fibrosis, are characterized by a predominant Th2 response. To date, specific SNPs in ST2 have been some of the most consistently associated genetic variants for asthma. Objectives We investigated the role of ST2 (a receptor for the Th2 cytokine IL-33) in chronic and late-stage schistosomiasis caused by S. japonicum, and the potential effect of ST2 genetic variants on stage of disease and ST2 expression. Methods 947 adult participant… Show more

“…By using a generalized estimating equation model, 3 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with higher Schistosoma species-soluble adult worm antigen-specific IgE/IgG 4 (a measure of resistance to S mansoni) were found. 61 The most significant SNP mapped to intron 1 and the allele, which has been shown to confer asthma risk in an African-American population, also conferred protection against schistosomiasis.…”

“…However, IL-33 has been shown to induce multivalent functions, leading in anti or pro-inflammatory effects in numerous pathologies (26). While several studies focussed on the role of IL-33 in driving hepatic disease during schistosomiasis (2729), hepatitis (3032), or malaria (33), alone, very few investigations, if any at all, have been performed on the association of this cytokine with hepatic schistosomiasis infection and liver disease in a context of mixed infection. This study therefore aimed at investigating the association between plasma levels of IL-33, infection status and liver fibrosis profiles in school children with S. mansoni infection alone or associated with malaria, hepatitis B or hepatitis C.…”
