The Role of Partner Support Among Women with Depressive Symptoms

Abstract: Scarce research has explored how sex partners and their provision of social support impact depression among women. The purpose of this study is to examine the role of social support (overall and specific types of support) provided by a sex partner on depressive symptoms among a sample of women (n=295). “…Depression among the elders is one of the most common and significant mental health issues among people around the world (Bluth et al, 2016;CDC, 2018;Davey-Rothwell, Stewart, Vadnais, Braxton, & Latkin, 2017;Rashid, Ong & Wong, 2012;WHO, 2018), yet it is often seen as inevitable specifically among older adults of color (Sriwattanakomen et al, 2010;Zalaquett & Stens, 2006). Although there is an abundance of research on depression, most of the research tends to relate to majority cultures.…”

Maintaining an intimate relationship with others helps patients obtain sufficient social support, including mental or material help from family, friends, etc., which can buffer stress and maintain a good emotional experience ( 38 ). Zhao et al reported that the social support of patients with hematological disorders is negatively correlated with anxiety and depression.…”

“…In this study, the term "family networks" is used to describe relationships with immediate and extended family members (e.g., in-laws) whereas "friend networks" refer to social connections with individuals that women identified as friends. Some literature indicates that partners are often the primary support in a woman's life (Davey-Rothwell et al, 2017) and may be essential during pregnancy. There is a dearth of research examining how partner networks, defined as women's connections to past or current romantic partners, may relate to ACEs.…”
