Background: Hypnotizability is a psychophysiological trait associated with several differences including the level of functional equivalence (FE) between imagery and perception, i.e., the similarity of the cortical activations and network configurations associated with each of them. FE is stronger in high hypnotizability individuals (highs) than low hypnotizable participants (lows). In this framework, this study investigates the correlation between electroencephalogram (EEG) of imagined arm/hand movements (MI) and of actual movements performed in the absence of suggestions (M) and in the presence of suggestions of arm/hand anesthesia (MA) in highs and lows. Methods: The EEG alpha (8-12 Hz) and beta (13-25 Hz) absolute power, classically associated with movement preparation and execution, were studied in 18 highs and 17 lows classified according to the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale, form A. EEG was recorded during M, MI, and MA. The subjective reports of imagery and the duration of movements were also studied. Results: The duration of movements did not differ between highs and lows. Highs reported better imagery during MI, greater perceived influence of the suggestion of anesthesia during MA, and lower cognitive efforts than lows for both tasks. In line with earlier studies, the spectral analysis did not reveal significant restructuring of the cortical activity during tasks in highs, whereas lows showed cortical changes during MI and MA indicating that they were able to mentally simulate movements and to accept suggestions for anesthesia during voluntary movement, despite their low hypnotizability scores. Conclusions: The present study indicates that unusual psychophysiological characteristics can differ in the response of individuals to suggestions.

Learning objectives After participating in this activity, learners should be better able to: • Assess differences between adult patients with the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and healthy control subjects in terms of empathy and related processes • Evaluate the effects of empathy or related processes as factors contributing to abnormal social functioning in BPD Abstract We reviewed 45 original research studies, published between 2000 and 2019, to assess differences between adult patients with the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and healthy control subjects in terms of empathy and related processes (i.e., theory of mind, mentalizing, social cognition, and emotional intelligence). Thirty-six studies reported deficits of empathy or related processes in patients with BPD. Enhanced emotional empathy in BPD was also reported in eight studies, all of which revealed that patients had increased scores of personal distress on the Interpersonal Reactivity Index self-report questionnaire. Six studies did not find significant differences between patients with BPD and healthy control subjects in terms of empathy or related processes. No study reported enhanced cognitive empathy, social cognition, or emotional intelligence in patients with BPD. We postulate that deficits of empathy or related processes contribute to preempting the formation of stable interpersonal relationships, whereas enhanced emotional empathy might lead to personal (and interpersonal) distress, further contributing to abnormal social functioning in BPD.

Se realizó la validación cultural del Inventario de Reactividad Interpersonal (IRI), traduciendo al español y revisando las propiedades psicométricas en sus modelos de dos factores, cuatro factores y cuatro factores + un factor de segundo orden. A través de muestreo no probabilístico participaron 386 estudiantes universitarios (edades entre 18 y 30 años, M=20.2; DE=2.6). La confiabilidad de las dimensiones resultó adecuada (Alfa de Cronbach 0.66 < α < 0.78; Omega de McDonald 0.70 < Ω < 0.80). El Análisis Factorial Confirmatorio mostró indicadores con buen ajuste al modelo de cuatro factores y cuatro factores más un factor de segundo orden e insuficientes en el modelo de dos factores. Las mujeres mostraron mayores puntajes en las dimensiones afectivas, mientras que los hombres mostraron mayores puntajes en las dimensiones cognitivas. La versión del IRI reducida a 22 ítems conserva buenas propiedades psicométricas en la población joven colombiana.
