Single-cycle induction chemotherapy for resectable advanced hypopharyngeal cancer

Abstract: A single cycle of IC with the combination of docetaxel + cisplatin may be sufficient to select advanced hypopharyngeal cancer patients with radio-sensitivity. IC intended for organ preservation strategies should be low toxic. Our strategy may be a useful for providing the benefits of IC and the opportunity for curative surgery without delay.

“…Commonly used regimens include TPF and platinum plus fluorouracil, with the former being significantly more effective than the latter [ 14 ]. Induction chemotherapy can reduce the tumour volume and maximise the retention of organ function [ 15 ]. It also facilitates screening to determine which patients are likely to respond to treatment with either radiotherapy or concurrent chemoradiotherapy.…”

“…Commonly used induction chemotherapy regimens in clinical practice include the TPF regimen and the PF (platinum + uorouracil) regimen; TPF is signi cantly more effective than PF (12). Induction chemotherapy can increase the retention of organ function by shrinking the tumour (13). It also acts as a screening procedure to identify patients sensitive to treatment by either radiotherapy or concurrent chemoradiotherapy; for insensitive patients, surgical treatment is preferable.…”
