280 one-opposition near-Earth asteroids recovered by the EURONEAR with the Isaac Newton Telescope

Abstract: Context. One-opposition near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) are growing in number, and they must be recovered to prevent loss and mismatch risk, and to improve their orbits, as they are likely to be too faint for detection in shallow surveys at future apparitions. Aims. We aimed to recover more than half of the one-opposition NEAs recommended for observations by the Minor Planet Center (MPC) using the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) in soft-override mode and some fractions of available D-nights. During about 130 h in tot… Show more

“…Thus, they require astrometric recovering (e.g. Vaduvescu et al 2018) (444584) 2006 UK is PHA with an estimated diameter of 277 m and it is the largest object from the sample reported here. It has a MOID with Earth of 0.014 AU and it is on a eccentric orbit (e = 0.54), with a perihelion q = 0.689AU.…”

“…It is not possible to carry out an unbiased comparison of these results with those obtained using large-area surveys like KiDS (Mahlke et al 2018) or VISTA VHS (Popescu et al 2016(Popescu et al , 2018, or with those specifically dedicated to SSO monitoring (e.g., Vaduvescu et al 2018). The main reason lies upon the differences in the used instrumentation, which lead to different magnitude and detection limits, and the observing strategy: while surveys like KiDS or VISTA VHS cover large areas in the sky, transit surveys like WTS focus in small areas but provide time-resolved information.…”

“…The tool represents also the relative position of the asteroids inside the windows. The purpose of this software script was to permit a fast visual identification of known asteroids during the analysis with Astrometrica of astronomic images, which is very useful to recover lost asteroids ( [10]).…”
