Origanum majoranaEssential Oil Lacks Mutagenic Activity in theSalmonella/Microsome and Micronucleus Assays

Abstract: The present study aimed to investigate the in vitro mutagenic activity of Origanum majorana essential oil. The most abundant compounds identified by GC-MS were γ-terpinene (25.73%), α-terpinene (17.35%), terpinen-4-ol (17.24%), and sabinene (10.8%). Mutagenicity was evaluated by the Salmonella/microsome test using the preincubation procedure on TA98, TA97a, TA100, TA102, and TA1535 Salmonella typhimurium strains, in the absence or in the presence of metabolic activation. Cytotoxicity was detected at concentrat… Show more

“…The most abundant carvacrol component was found to be the first most abundant compound in previous studies: 84.00% [51], 78.27% [77], 75.30% [51], 40.57% [78], 34.14% [79]. In our study, the other main components, α-Terpineol [45,78,[80][81][82], p-Cymene [51,80,[83][84][85][86], α-Terpineol [45,78,[80][81][82], y-Terpinene [46,51,[77][78][79][80][81][83][84][85][86][87][88], and 1,8 Cineole [45,80,83,89,90], were in line with previous studies.…”

“…Helium was used as the carrier gas, with a constant flow rate of 1.8 mL/min. A 3% w/v solution in CH 2 Cl 2 was prepared for the essential oil sample, and 0.1 µL was injected at a split ratio of 1:45 [44,45,47]. The percentage composition of enantiomers was calculated from the peak area.…”
