Sodium Butyrate Upregulates miR-203 Expression to Exert Anti-Proliferation Effect on Colorectal Cancer Cells

Abstract: Background: As the end product of the bacterial fermentation of dietary fiber in the colonic lumen, sodium butyrate (NaBt) has been reported to exert antitumor effects on colorectal cancer (CRC). In addition to functioning as a histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor, NaBt also regulates the expression of microRNAs (miRNAs) to inhibit CRC cell proliferation. Yet, the mechanisms involved are not completely understood. Here we investigate whether NaBt regulates miR-203 to inhibit CRC growth and explore the promisin… Show more

“…ncRNAs are comprised of microRNAs (miRNAs), tRNAs, siRNAs, snoRNAs and long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) [8, 9]. miRNA have attracted a fair amount of attention over the past few decades [10, 11]. A large number of studies have shown that miRNAs can induce mRNA degradation or translational inhibition and hence can mediate post-transcriptional gene silencing [6].…”

“…Through these post-transcriptional gene regulation mechanisms, miRNAs regulate a wide range of biological processes, including cell apoptosis and differentiation, migration, apoptosis, development and metabolism [13-15]. Accumulating evidence has shown aberrant miR-520 expression in tissue samples from with many types of human malignant tumours [16].…”

“…All those ultrastructural changes could be related to the first stage of an apoptotic process which may suggest a transition between the two types of programmed cell death: apoptosis or autophagy. Additional experiments with a positive control for apoptosis [39] would be interesting to further corroborate the implication of the apoptotic process.…”
