Hypertriglyceridemia: the importance of identifying patients at risk

Abstract: This review aims to explain risk factors, consequences, and management strategies recommended for patients with hypertriglyceridemia. A search of PubMed was performed: 'Hypertriglyceridemia'[Majr], limited to English-language and published in the 5 years up to April 2016. Abstracts of the 680 results were screened for inclusion. Reference lists of publications included were also screened for inclusion. Approximately 25% of the United States population has elevated (≥150 mg/dL) triglycerides (TG) putting them a… Show more

“…Notably, these populations differ in relation to life-styles and risks of CVD. Moreover, the data from the CONOR-survey consistently showed that sHTG level was associated with a number of risk factors for CVD, diabetes and the metabolic syndrome, as evidenced by elevated glucose, blood pressure, BMI as well as low physical activity [17]. If these risk factors represent potential causes or consequences of sHTG or if they are associated phenomena reflecting common pathogenic mechanisms such as those leading to metabolic syndromes, are at present not known.…”

“…Hypertriglyceridemia is often associated with T1DM and T2DM [134][135][136]. Cholesterol ester transfer protein (CETP) exchanges cholesterol and triglycerides between very low-density lipoprotein and HDL [137].…”

“…To rule out other causes, we only include patients without any familial dyslipidemia or history of alcohol intake. As these two factors also play a role in increasing triglycerides as compared to polygenic etiologies like obesity, insulin resistance or diabetes mellitus [10-11]. …”
