Exogenously Applied Plant Growth Regulators Enhance the Morpho-Physiological Growth and Yield of Rice under High Temperature

Abstract: A 2-year experiment was conducted to ascertain the effects of exogenously applied plant growth regulators (PGR) on rice growth and yield attributes under high day (HDT) and high night temperature (HNT). Two rice cultivars (IR-64 and Huanghuazhan) were subjected to temperature treatments in controlled growth chambers and four different combinations of ascorbic acid (Vc), alpha-tocopherol (Ve), brassinosteroids (Br), methyl jasmonates (MeJA), and triazoles (Tr) were applied. High temperature severely affected ri… Show more

“…Although rice plants can withstand certain heat stress, most reports provide direct evidence of decreased rice yield and grain quality because of the increased temperature . The negative effects on rice plant caused by high temperature were a result of decreased spikelet fertility, faster grain filling, fewer filled grains, and lower grain weight, which affect grain yield and quality during the grain filling stage (Prasad et al, 2006;Mohammed and Tarpley, 2009b;Lin et al, 2010;Fahad et al, 2016). Rice grains ripened under high temperature exhibited low weights, chalky appearance, and low amylose content (Yamakawa et al, 2007;Mitsui et al, 2013).…”

“…Growth regulators are organic chemical substances which, when applies in small quantities aid in the regulation of plant growth and modify the physiological response in plants. Growth regulators have immense importance in enhancing Directing for Higher Seed Production in Vegetables DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5772/intechopen.90646 vegetable production and have been used to improve seed germination, increase in yield and tolerance against diseases and unfavourable conditions [56]. Apart from these functions growth regulators have usefulness in vegetable seed production by altering sex expression, increasing fruit set as well as seed yield and inducing male sterility, without exerting any harmful effects on the environment and human health [57].…”
