Development of an open technology sensor suite for assisted living: a student-led research project

Abstract: Many countries have a rapidly ageing population, placing strain on health services and creating a growing market for assistive technology for older people. We have, through a student-led, 12-week project for 10 students from a variety of science and engineering backgrounds, developed an integrated sensor system to enable older people, or those at risk, to live independently in their own homes for longer, while providing reassurance for their family and carers. We provide details on the design procedure and per… Show more

“…Chacin, Oozu, & Iwata, 2016). Open technology referred to the development of accessible, technologically advanced outcomes (Manton et al, 2016), and one source examined the transdisciplinary involvement of social sciences in the development and adoption of sustainable, appropriate technologies (Nascimento & Pólvora, 2015). Open design platform referred to a set of predefined standards, parts, assembly details, or software that enable replication and modification of solutions in the context of the platform (Betthauser et al, 2014).…”

“…One method that has been used to monitor and assist elderly individuals both in terms of measuring fall risk and many other features of daily life (Philips et al, 2016, Rantz et al, 2013, Alwan, 2009, Manton et al, 2016, Rantz et al, 2014, Villacorta, Jimenez, Val, & Izquierdo, 2011 is the "smart home" concept. A number of ambient sensors such as cameras, motion/depth detectors, pressure mats, microphones, and latch sensors keep track of daily activity, gait parameters, medication, food, and water intake, and the like to ensure that individuals remain healthy and active.…”

“…How can we harness this revolution and empower the next generation of leaders in sensor innovation? The final article in the issue describes the development of a sensor unit that monitors living patterns of older people in their own homes [7]. Using open source technologies, a cohort of 10 Masters students, who participate in the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Sensor Technologies and Applications (http:// cdt.sensors.cam.ac.uk) at the University of Cambridge, developed a highly sophisticated sensor suite to assist older people to live a better and longer independent life in their own homes.…”
