An epidemiological study of A. cantonensis in Jamaica subsequent to an outbreak of human cases of eosinophilic meningitis in 2000

Abstract: The infection status of angiostrongylosis in Jamaica was assessed in wild rats and molluscs in the 5 years following the major outbreak of eosinophilic meningitis (EM) in 2000. Parasitological analyses of 297 Rattus rattus and 140 Rattus norvegicus, and 777 terrestrial molluscs from all 14 Parishes on the island revealed Angiostrongylus cantonensis in 32·0% of the rats and in 12·5% of the molluscs. Multivariate analyses confirmed that A. cantonensis occurred significantly more frequently in R. rattus (Odds Rat… Show more

“…Our overall estimate of 38% infection prevalence in New Orleans is comparable to count-based estimates reported for other areas where A. cantonensis is considered endemic ( 19 , 20 , but see 21 ). We also found A. cantonensis in rats across New Orleans and in neighboring St. Bernard Parish, which contrasts with the patchy distributions exhibited by other rodent-associated pathogens in cities ( 22 25 ).…”

“…As has been noted in prior studies ( 19 , 20 ), count-based approaches probably yield conservative estimates relative to PCR-based approaches of infection. For example, in Hawaii, a count-based approach yielded a prevalence estimate of 54%, whereas PCR yielded an estimate of 100% ( 20 ).…”

“…cantonensis in 22.8% of rats tested in Florida, and a recent study in Jamaica, immediately following an outbreak of angiostrongyliasis in humans, found similar prevalence with 32% of all rats sampled infected with A . cantonensis [46]. …”

“…Além da falta de proteção ao manusear a espécie exótica em estudo, há também outros meios de contaminação dos seres humanos pelo Angiostrongylus, por exemplo: a ingestão do animal cru ou mal cozido e também por verduras, legumes e frutas que não foram bem higienizadas, pois o caracol gigante africano libera em seu muco os patógenos (Kramer, Posner e Gosnell, 2018;Waugh et al, 2016;Giannelli et al, 2015).…”
