Rat lungworm (Angiostrongylus cantonensis), a parasitic nematode that can cause eosinophilic meningitis in humans, was first detected in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, in the mid-1980s and now appears to be widespread in the southeastern United States. We assessed the distribution, prevalence, and intensity of A. cantonensis infection in New Orleans by examining lung biopsy samples of rodents trapped at 96 sites in 9 areas in Orleans Parish and 1 area in neighboring St. Bernard Parish during May 2015 through February 2017. These areas were selected to capture contrasting levels of income, flooding, and pos-disaster landscape management after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. We detected A. cantonensis in all areas and in 3 of the 4 rat species trapped. Overall prevalence was ≈38% but varied by area, host species, and host species co-occurrence. Infection intensity also varied by host species. These findings suggest that socioecological analysis of heterogeneity in definitive and intermediate host infection could improve understanding of health risks across the city.

The parasitic nematode Angiostrongylus cantonensis is a major cause of eosinophilic meningitis in humans, and has been documented in other incidental hosts such as birds, horses, dogs and non-human primates. It is endemic in Hawaii, and there have been sporadic reports in the southern continental United States. This parasite uses rats as definitive hosts and snails as intermediate hosts. In this study, we collected potential definitive and intermediate hosts throughout Florida to ascertain the geographic distribution in the state: Rats, environmental rat fecal samples, and snails were collected from 18 counties throughout the state. Classical diagnostics and morphological identification, along with molecular techniques were used to identify nematode species and confirm the presence of A. cantonensis.Of the 171 Rattus rattus collected, 39 (22.8%) were positive for A. cantonensis, and 6 of the 37 (16.2%) environmental rat fecal samples collected in three of the surveyed counties were also positive for this parasite by real time PCR. We examined 1,437 gastropods, which represented 32 species; 27 (1.9%) were positive for A. cantonensis from multiple sites across Florida. Three non-native gastropod species, Bradybaena similaris, Zachrysia provisoria, and Paropeas achatinaceum, and three native gastropod species, Succinea floridana, Ventridens demissus, and Zonitoides arboreus, which are newly recorded intermediate hosts for the parasite, were positive for A. cantonensis. This study indicates that A. cantonensis is established in Florida through the finding of adult and larval stages in definitive and intermediate hosts, respectively, throughout the state. The ability for this historically subtropical nematode to thrive in a more temperate climate is alarming, however as the climate changes and average temperatures rise, gastropod distributions will probably expand, leading to the spread of this parasite in more temperate areas. Through greater awareness of host species and prevalence of A. cantonensis in the United States, potential accidental infections may be avoided.

A espécie Achatina fulica está presente em diversas partes do mundo adaptando-se as condições ambientais. Essa adaptabilidade é preocupante, pois a espécie transmite aos seres humanos o helminto nematódeo Angiostrongylus, tanto o costaricensis como o cantonensis. Em Maringá, cidade localizada na Região Sul do Brasil, o molusco está presente, e conta com mais de 780 reclamações realizadas pela população da existência da espécie nas residências urbanas. O objetivo desta pesquisa é compreender como ocorre a interação de Achatina fulica com as condições ambientais em que são encontrados na zona urbana do município de Maringá, no sentido de saber se as condições são favoráveis para sua permanência e reprodução. Bem como avaliar os riscos potenciais a saúde humana por meio dos questionários utilizados durante as entrevistas. Os procedimentos metodológicos demandaram da utilização de questionários para avaliação qualiquantitativa com a população; a coleta das coordenadas foi realizada com o Sistema de Posicionamento Global (GPS) Garmim Etrex. Para elaboração do mapeamento, utilizaram-se os softwares ESRI ArcGIS 10.1®, Quantum Gis 2.18.2 e Corel Draw X7® para finalização dos mapas; realizou a coleta de temperatura, umidade, luminosidade e altitude, por meio do aparelho multimedidor "Termo-higro-anemômetro-luxímetro-altímetro-barômetro-Kr875"; realizamos também análise de regressão logística utilizando o software SAS® University Edition. Ao final das análises, concluímos que Maringá possui as condições ambientais favoráveis à existência e reprodução da espécie. Quanto aos questionários identificamos que há roedores (ratos) em mais de 50% das residências, assim, aumentando as chances dos caracóis estarem contaminados, sendo um risco a saúde humana.
