Current status of breast reconstruction in China: an experience of 951 breast reconstructions from a single institute

Abstract: Breast reconstruction cases increased over the 15 years with the change of paradigm. Most strikingly, prosthesis-based reconstruction rapidly gained its prevalence and became the most common strategy. NSM was only performed for highly selected patients. Patients with breast reconstruction were able to achieve satisfactory loco-regional control in our cohort.

“…Previous data of Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center (FUSCC) included 951 breast reconstructions conducted between 2000 and 2015 [3]. And concluded that latissimus LD ± implant was performed in 51.5% patients which was much higher than implant (25.5%) and autologous flap (27.0%) [3]. However, the current questionnaire survey represented 65.7% (4,296/6,534) breast reconstructions were IBBR among 95 hospitals in 2017.…”

“…Despite the advantages of IBR, modified radical mastectomy remained the primary strategy for treating BC in China. Less than 10% of patients with BC in China received IBR at the same time as mastectomy . One barrier to IBR is the concern that surgical complications after reconstruction may have an impact on the recovery outcomes.…”
