Sarcoidosis and chronic hepatitis C: treatment with prednisone and colchicine

Abstract: Sarcoidosis is a disease which still has uncertain etiology. Possible environmental causes are cited in the literature, like organic and inorganic particles and infectious agents. Recent studies have demonstrated the occurrence of sarcoidosis in patients with chronic C hepatitis; however, this association remains without statistical or causal evidence. In this report a case of sarcoidosis associated with chronic hepatitis C will be described, with subcutaneous lesions, considered rare, and good response to tre… Show more

“…5 The benefits of colchicine were described in different viralmediated inflammatory conditions such as EBV/CMV-induced myocarditis, 9 pericarditis triggered by influenza B, 10 interstitial pneumonia of unknown origin 11 and interstitial pneumonia caused by autoimmune process. 12 The side effect profile of colchicine is widely known, with gastrointestinal symptoms occurring in up to 17% of patients, while severe organ manifestations being rare. 13 Based on the identification of HIS in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia and the anti-inflammatory properties of colchicine, we postulated the rationale of use of colchicine in patients admitted to the hospital for COVID-19.…”

“…Conversely, the tattoo might be the target of sarcoidosis, and hepatitis C might play a role as a precipitating factor. There have been reports of HCV isolated in sarcoid tissue ( 17 ). In our patient, incidentally found hepatitis C may have been a potentiating factor in the development of sarcoidosis.…”
