Evaluation of PIMATM CD4 System for Decentralization of Immunological Monitoring of HIV-Infected Patients in Senegal

Abstract: BackgroundHIV infection is a concern in the army troupes because of the risk behaviour of the military population. In order to allow regular access to CD4+ T cell enumeration of military personnel as well as their dependents and civilians living with HIV, the Senegalese Army AIDS program is implementing PIMATM Alere technology in urban and semi-urban military medical centres. Validation such device is therefore required prior their wide implementation. The purpose of this study was to compare CD4+ T cell count… Show more

“…Considering the limited laboratory facilities in Sierra Leone, diagnostic services and technical expertise should be scaled up to facilitate universal screening, guide clinical decision-making and monitor treatment response. The use of point-of-care technology for CD4 enumeration and dried blood spots for HIV viral load monitoring and HBV DNA quantification have been validated in resource-limited settings and could play a vital role in optimizing linkage to and retention in care and improving clinical outcomes (WHO, 2015a;Desai et al, 2017;Faye et al, 2016;Vinikoor et al, 2015;Bargain et al, 2020).…”

“…The fourth-generation rapid test by SD Bioline HIV-1/2 3.0 (Standard Diagnostics Inc) was used for HIV testing. CD4 cell count was determined using the Alere Pima™ Analyzer (Abbott), a point-of-care testing platform with comparable performance to flow cytometry-based methods and validated in resource-limited settings [9]. Tuberculosis was confirmed using the GeneXpert MTB/RIF assay (Cepheid) and/or sputum acid fast bacilli (AFB) smear, with compatible chest radiographic findings.…”

“…The Alere Pima Analyzer (Abbott) was used for CD4 enumeration. This is a well validated point-of-care CD4 testing platform with proven comparable performance to flow cytometry-based methods, especially in resource-limited settings [ 13 ]. The GeneXpert MTB/RIF assay (Cepheid) and sputum AFB smear with/without chest radiography was used to determine tuberculosis positive status.…”
