Psychometric Evaluation of the PSQI in U.S. College Students

Abstract: The PSQI demonstrated moderate convergent validity compared to measures of insomnia and fatigue and good divergent validity with measures of daytime sleepiness, circadian phase preference, and alcohol and marijuana use. The PSQI demonstrated considerable overlap with depression, anxiety, and perceived stress. Therefore, caution should be used with interpretation.

“…Similar conclusions were reported in a large study aimed at comparing self‐report sleep quality and actigraphy results in a cohort of 2,086 Hispanic Americans 13 . Overall, the PSQI can be regarded as a good screening tool, but not a substitute for sleep disorder diagnoses based on a comprehensive clinical interview performed by skilled clinicians with the support of objective measurements; therefore, data obtained by this questionnaire should be considered with caution 14 …”

“…3 Subject well-being as captured at baseline and the 12-month follow-up with the SF-12 questionnaire and reported as two separate subscale scores: a physical health composite score (PCS) and a mental health composite score (MCS) specific aspects of sleep quality improve for 10 kHz SCS subjects. It is noteworthy that this scale has been shown to correlate strongly with measures of depression, anxiety, stress, and a negative outlook [41,42].…”

“…Both global scores (T1-T2 correlation coefficient = 0.85, p < 0.001) and component scores such as sleep latency (T1-T2 correlation coefficient = 0.84, p < 0.001) show high test-retest reliability [54]. The PSQI has been suggested as a good screening test for insomnia in college students, with a recommended cut-off ≥ 6 due to its high diagnostic accuracy [56]. The Chinese PSQI has been validated among general and clinical populations in Hong Kong [57,58].…”
