Comparative study of hemorrhagic and ischemic complications among anticoagulants in patients undergoing cryoballoon ablation for atrial fibrillation

Abstract: Warfarin use significantly increased the risk of serious bleeding, in contrast, CB-A did not place the patients at an increased risk of complications under a DOAC treatment. There were no significant differences regarding preventing embolic events among the DOAC drugs.

“…Patients on vitamin K-antagonists were scheduled for the procedure at a target international normalized ratio of 2.0-3.0. Similar to a recent report, patients on direct oral anticoagulants (dabigatran, apixaban, and rivaroxaban) were advised to take the last dose 24 h prior to the procedure [16]. No heparin bridging was given to any patient.…”

“…Furthermore, more patients were treated with apixaban in our cohort. In addition, Okishige et al compared the use of VKA vs NOACs in Japanese patients undergoing AF ablation with the CB . The periprocedural anticoagulation management differed from our institutional standard.…”

“…Data on the safety and efficacy of periprocedural anticoagulation with NOACs in patients undergoing CB ablation for the treatment of AF are limited. [5][6][7] Furthermore, the management of periprocedural anticoagulation varies widely in the currently available studies. Most important, although data on the use of NOACs exist, experience, in particular with apixaban, is scarce.…”

“…The ablation procedure was performed as described previously . Briefly, after having obtained general anesthesia, the left atrium (LA) was accessed using a single transseptal puncture by intracardiac echocardiography (Sound‐Star AcuNav Ultrasound Catheter, Cordis Webster, Johnson & Johnson, Diamond Bar, CA, USA) guidance.…”

All measurements and analyses were performed offline after the procedure.…”
